Townsends Inlet — Where Ludlam Island Ends and Seven Mile Beach Begins

Townsends Inlet separates Ludlam Island from Seven Mile Beach, and the 1920 aerial shows this tidal inlet in its natural state — a dynamic passage between the two barrier islands with shifting shoals and strong currents. By 1933, the summer hurricane had altered the inlet's shape and the adjacent beaches. The 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane caused significant changes to the inlet configuration — compare the inlet's mouth in 1933 and 1944 and the difference in shoaling is visible. By 1962, the Ash Wednesday Storm again reshaped the inlet, and the four aerials together document four decades of a natural inlet in constant motion.
