🌊 Coastal History

Strathmere — The Remote Southern End of Ludlam Island

Strathmere occupies the southern tip of Ludlam Island near Corson's Inlet — one of the most remote and least developed communities on the Cape May County coast. The 1920 aerial shows a handful of summer cottages and the dynamic inlet at the island's southern terminus, where Corson's Inlet connects bay and ocean. This inlet has always been highly active, migrating and shoaling, and the 1920 view shows its natural state. By 1933, the hurricane had pushed storm surge into the low-lying southern sections. The 1944 aerial shows changes in the inlet configuration. By 1962, the Ash Wednesday Storm fundamentally altered Corson's Inlet — compare the inlet's shape and position in 1920 and 1962 and the dramatic migration is unmistakable.
