Sea Isle City — Ludlam Island's Premier Resort
Sea Isle City occupies the central portion of Ludlam Island, Cape May County's barrier island facing the Atlantic. In 1920, Sea Isle had a boardwalk, a modest hotel district, and a well-established resort identity as a destination for Philadelphia-area families. The 1920 aerial shows the community grid, the boardwalk, and a wide beach with natural dune backing. By 1933, the Chesapeake-Potomac Hurricane had caused significant flooding of the bayfront streets. The 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane was the most damaging storm Sea Isle had seen in decades — the dune damage in the 1944 aerial is clearly visible. By 1962, the Ash Wednesday Storm produced flooding that covered the entire island and forced lengthy evacuations.
