Ocean City — The Dry Resort Through Three Historic Eras
Ocean City was founded in 1879 by Methodist ministers and has been alcohol-free ever since — a fact that shaped its character as a family resort distinct from its neighbors. The 1920 aerial shows Ocean City's famous boardwalk and Music Pier extending into the ocean, with a wide beach backed by a substantial resort community. By 1933, the summer hurricane had damaged the Music Pier and boardwalk — look for the change in pier structures between 1920 and 1933. The 1962 aerial shows Ocean City after the Ash Wednesday Storm, which caused massive overwash across the center of the island and extensive flooding of the bayfront — a vivid contrast to the orderly resort city visible in 1920.
