Normandy Beach — A Quiet Community on the Barrier

Normandy Beach is a modest summer community on the Ocean County barrier, sandwiched between the more developed Lavallette and the exclusive Mantoloking. The 1920 aerial shows the beginnings of cottage development on what was then a largely undeveloped stretch of the barrier, with natural dunes intact and the beach wide and unarmored. By 1933, the community had grown modestly and the hurricane had taken its toll on the frontal dunes. The 1962 view, post–Ash Wednesday Storm, shows Normandy Beach after the storm that reshaped the entire Ocean County coast — the beach is dramatically narrower compared to the 1920 aerial.
