🌊 Coastal History

Longport — The Southern Tip of Absecon Island

Longport occupies the southern tip of Absecon Island, where the island tapers to a point facing Great Egg Harbor Bay. It is the quietest and most residential of the four Absecon Island communities, with a strong tradition of year-round residency alongside the summer population. The 1920 aerial shows Longport's characteristic taper — the island narrows to a point with bay on both sides — and the modest year-round community already well established. By 1933, the community was largely unchanged but the oceanfront showed storm erosion. The 1962 aerial captures Longport after the Ash Wednesday Storm, which caused significant beach erosion at the island's southern tip, one of the coast's most exposed positions.
