🌊 Coastal History
Highlands Beach — A Strip Below the Bluffs
Highlands Beach occupies a narrow strip of land squeezed between the ocean and the base of the Highlands bluffs. The 1933 aerial shows the modest row of cottages perched just above the beach, with the dramatic hillside rising sharply behind them — this is never a large community because the land simply does not allow it. By 1962, the Ash Wednesday Storm had overwashed the low beach and driven surge against the bluffs with nowhere to drain. Comparing 1933 and 1962 reveals the narrow margin between habitation and the sea in this uniquely compressed landscape.
