High Bar Harbor — A Post-War Bayfront Community

High Bar Harbor occupies the northern tip of Long Beach Island, tucked into the protected bay behind Barnegat Light. The 1962 aerial shows the entire community in a single view: a modest grid of streets with bayfront lots and boat slips, developed primarily in the 1950s as the LBI real estate market expanded northward after World War II. There is no oceanfront here — High Bar Harbor faces the bay exclusively, sheltered from direct wave action but vulnerable to bay surge. The 1962 aerial was taken shortly after the Ash Wednesday Storm, which pushed Barnegat Bay water over the bayfront streets and into the lowest lots.
