🌊 Coastal History

Diamond Beach — Near Cape May Inlet

Diamond Beach occupies the southern end of Five Mile Beach, near Cape May Inlet — one of the most geologically complex areas on the Jersey Shore where the barrier island system meets the cape itself. The 1920 aerial shows Diamond Beach before significant development, with natural beach and dune conditions near the inlet. By 1933, modest development had appeared. The 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane struck the Cape May area with particular intensity, and the Diamond Beach aerial from that year shows dramatic inlet-area changes. By 1962, Diamond Beach was developing as a community, and the Ash Wednesday Storm caused flooding and erosion at this exposed southern position.
