🌊 Coastal History

Bradley Beach — The Working Man's Shore

While Spring Lake catered to socialites and Sea Bright to the wealthy, Bradley Beach was the shore town for everyone else — particularly the Italian and Irish families from Newark and Elizabeth who packed the trains each summer weekend. The 1920 aerial shows the densely developed grid of bungalows and the modest boardwalk along a wide, crowded beach. By 1933, the hurricane had eroded the beach noticeably and damaged the boardwalk. Comparing 1920 and 1933 gives you a snapshot of two eras: the pre-Depression height of beach bungalow culture, and its battered but resilient aftermath.
