Belmar — Shark River Inlet and a Fishing Town

Belmar's identity has always been tied to Shark River Inlet — the 1920 aerial shows the inlet mouth, the surrounding marshes, and the fleet of fishing boats that made Belmar one of the Shore's premier fishing ports. The town grid of beach bungalows runs up to the oceanfront, where a modest boardwalk served the summer crowds. By 1933, the Chesapeake-Potomac Hurricane had caused significant changes to the Shark River inlet mouth — compare the inlet's shape in 1920 and 1933 and you can see how dramatically storms reshaped these waterways. The beach itself also shows erosion from the 1933 storm season.
