Beach Haven Gardens — Southern LBI's Residential Fabric
Beach Haven Gardens sits between Beach Haven and Beach Haven Terrace on southern LBI, part of the continuous strip of summer communities that makes up the island's settled area. The 1920 aerial shows the community in its infancy — a handful of streets laid out but mostly undeveloped, with natural dunes fronting a wide beach. By 1933, considerable building had occurred. The 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane struck during September peak season and the dune damage is visible in that year's aerial. By 1962, Beach Haven Gardens was a fully built community — the Ash Wednesday Storm drove surge from both ocean and bay across the island, visible in the 1962 aerial as overwash debris and narrowed beach.
