Avalon Manor — The Mainland Behind Seven Mile Beach

Avalon Manor is a small mainland community on the bay side, directly across from the northern tip of Seven Mile Beach. The 1962 aerial shows the community in its early post-World War II development — modest homes along the bay edge with the salt marshes and tidal creeks of the back-bay visible behind. This is the mainland landscape that faces the barrier islands: a world of salt marsh, tidal creeks, and shallow bay water, very different from the ocean-facing barrier across the water. The 1962 Ash Wednesday Storm flooded the low-lying mainland bayfront areas extensively, and this aerial captures the community in the year of that great storm.
