Asbury Park — Convention Hall, the Boardwalk, and the Storm

Asbury Park in 1920 was at its absolute peak — the Convention Hall, the casino, and the famous boardwalk drew hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. The 1920 aerial shows the grand Convention Hall building, the dense urban resort grid, and the wide beach in front of the boardwalk. By 1933, the Chesapeake-Potomac Hurricane had damaged the boardwalk and severely eroded the beach face — compare the beach width in these two aerials and the difference is stark. The 1962 aerial shows Asbury Park after the Ash Wednesday Storm, which caused some of the worst beach erosion in the city's history and forced major conversations about the future of the oceanfront.
